Publicity Editor at Pubs and Publications

pubs and publications

As you may have gathered from the posts on here, I love learning the practical aspects of completing a doctorate successfully. I am interested in people and how they experience their PhD journey, the tools, tips and tricks that they employ to get them through each step of the process and succeed.

One of the blogs I read to learn about other peoples aspects of PhD life is Pubs and Publications and I find the posts there a real breath of fresh air. People write about their ups and downs of PhD life in a manner that feels therapeutic, humorous and that makes me want to read more of the posts. I reached out to them earlier this year and offered to contribute a guest post for them. I wasn't too sure if they would agree to my contribution and I was over the moon when they came back and said that they would love for me to write a post for them. So I wrote a post about how I juggle full-time work, part-time PhD, being a parent and all the rest of life and it was published early in May.

Not long after that I saw on the blog that they were looking for new committee members and at first, wasn't too sure that I would cut the mustard but I mulled it over and decided to bite the bullet and submit an application. The entire process was fairly brief and then it was a case of waiting.

In my day job, I am always telling academics to put themselves out there and to publicise who they are, what they have to offer and from that opportunities will come forth. So I took some of my own advice and it paid off.

In late August I received an email congratulating me on being accepted as a Publicity Editor for the blog and that there would be an introductory online meeting the following week to help me get my head around the task. I was so excited but also slightly apprehensive that I had perhaps accepted a role which was going to add to my already packed schedule. but I wanted to give it a try. I have been in the role for a short time now and it's great. I am hoping to pick up the pace a little more over the coming weeks/ months to try and get better at the tasks in the role and see if I can seriously make some improvements in my knowledge of publicising aspects of the blog.

This will be a voluntary role that I can put on my academic CV and who knows where it will lead to in the future. I would highly recommend to anyone reading this who is undertaking some kind of research studies themselves, to reach out to Pubs and Publications and offer an idea of a blog post that you yourself could contribute to the blog as you just never know where it might lead to.

Being a part of such a nice team of people has really given me a thirst for guest posting and I am always on the outlook for guest post opportunities so if you know of any then please do get in touch. For now, I am going to get my head down and do some PhD reading as I am feeling a little behind in that department. Have a fantastic week.
